The National Commission for Women notes a reportedly stolen Chandigarh University student film.

After students at a private university in Mohali, Punjab, had recordings of themselves allegedly committing suicide ‘leaked,’ the National Commission for Women has asked for a First Information Report to filed on the incident. The Commission stated that it has come across several media reports and posts on Twitter saying that recordings of females staying in a dormitory affiliated with Chandigarh University have leaked and that some of the ladies have attempted to take their own lives as a result of this. The “rumors” that inappropriate videos of numerous female students had recorded sparked a campus-wide uprising at the educational institution that was the focus of the unrest. Students also asserted that the administration was attempting to hide the fact that some students had committed suicide. Protests continued far into midnight on the Chandigarh University campus, located on the Ludhiana-Chandigarh route. On Sunday, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann issued an order to investigate the situation in response to the unrest.

According to the police, a female student accused of the incident provided her with footage. The National Commission for Women (NCW) issued a statement in which it stated. That chairperson Rekha Sharma written to the Director General of Police in Punjab requesting that an FIR filed against the perpetrators as soon as possible and that the matter handled in a manner that was stringent and without any leniency.

According to the statement made by the NCW, the victims need to receive appropriate therapy, and their safety and security must maintained. The organization that advocates for women’s rights have also sent a letter to the Vice Chancellor of Chandigarh University, urging him to take severe action against the perpetrators, following the law and stating that the university must investigate the matter thoroughly in an impartial manner. The Commission also requested that the chairwoman of the Punjab State Commission for Women conduct an immediate investigation into the facts of the case and ensure that the police are conducting an impartial probe into the matter without being influenced.
