A woman whose parents coerced her into an early marriage is the protagonist of Khalish. Her husband’s death has left her and her son all alone. As she soon receives her bahu home, her son is the happiest he has ever been. As time passes, the saas grows resentful of the bahu and begins to scrutinise every move and decision she makes. The bahu makes every effort to warm up her saas, but she is unable to do so, and she is unable to identify the reason why. She tells her saas that she is aware of this and explains how her young marriage and the subsequent loneliness following her husband’s passing may have had a negative affect on her life in a variety of ways.
The saas confides in her young bahu after initially being hesitant to do so and tells her about her risqué fantasies involving a young man from their neighbourhood. In an effort to win her over because she wants what is best for her saas, the bahu makes her a promise that she will make that man fall in love with her.
